Coming from a work life as a building electrician, Jerry joined Norfolk Southern and built a 30-year career centered around locomotive maintenance, troubleshooting, and reliability initiatives. Jerry’s experience spans multiple roles and responsibilities, reflecting a deep understanding of locomotive systems and operations. Starting as an electrician, Jerry spent seven years working on the electrical systems of GE and EMD locomotives. Local supervision recognized his skills, and Jerry was promoted to a first line supervisory position at a large running repair shop supporting the operation of 1000 locomotives.
With two decades of running repair experience, Jerry was promoted to General Foreman at Norfolk Southern’s GE overhaul facility in Roanoke, VA where he oversaw complex overhaul projects and broadened his overall locomotive knowledge. Three years later, Jerry moved on to an Electrical Engineering position at the “Transportation Data Center” where Jerry was involved with innovative projects to optimize the collection and processing of data acquired by onboard locomotive systems. Four years later, Jerry was appointed the Engineer of Locomotive Reliability for Norfolk Southern’s large yard and local fleet consisting of nearly one thousand units. In this role Jerry identified systemic issues that afflicted the low horsepower fleet, prescribed effective solutions and wrote detailed repair instructions, significantly enhancing the reliability of this fleet. Thus, Jerry has a comprehensive knowledge of DC locomotives and extensive troubleshooting skills that few people can match.
