Ernie started his vehicle maintenance career working on off-highway equipment. In 1988 he joined Conrail, working at the Collingwood Diesel Shop in Cleveland, OH. Moving on to the oil lab at the Enola Diesel shop near Harrisburg, Ernie progressed to General Foreman handling locomotive matters at outlying points at Allentown, Reading, and Croxton. Recognizing Ernie’s talent, Norfolk Southern promoted Ernie to Sr. General Foreman when Norfolk Southern acquired 58% of Conrail on June 1, 1999. Later Ernie transferred to the Juniata locomotive Shop in Altoona, PA. During this period, he also operated a business for the mobile repair of industrial and shortline locomotives in the Keystone state.
In 2004 Ernie was promoted to Assistant General Superintendent at Junita and then promoted again to Manager of the Chattanooga Diesel Shop three years later. Then it was back to the Enola Diesel shop as the Shop Manager for three years followed by a return to Altoona as the General Superintendent of the largest locomotive shop in North America. As General Superintendent, Ernie had responsibility for large scale capital rebuild programs, the rebuilding of diesel engines, wreck repair, operation of a large wheel shop, the traction motor rebuild line and the EMD power assembly shop. Later, Ernie was over mechanical operations on the Pittsburgh and Harrisburg divisions with responsibility for two running repair locomotive shops.
