Allen graduated from Texas A&M University in 1977 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After spending a year with a petrochemical engineering firm, Allen started his railroad career in 1978. In 1980 he joined a Norfolk Southern predecessor, the Norfolk and Western Railway. Over the years Allen rose through various supervisory positions in locomotive shops at Decatur, IL, Chicago, IL, Chattanooga, TN and Roanoke, VA becoming well versed in the world of shop operations. Eventually Allen landed on the mechanical department staff in Atlanta, GA where he reached the position of Manager of Locomotive Engineering with a staff of seven subordinates. Since retiring in 2016, Allen has consulted on a variety of railroad related projects. Allen’s skillset includes knowledge of all aspects of railroad operations, expertise in locomotive troubleshooting with great knowledge of both electrical and mechanical systems. He has a detailed knowledge of Federal Railroad Administration regulations and the Association of American Railroads (AAR) Standards and Recommended Practices. Allen is a subject matter expert on locomotive brake systems (including PTC installation), locomotive modernizations & upgrades, operator’s cabs and non-OEM hardware applications. Allen is experienced with common office software as well as being competent with AutoCAD.
